FAQ

Questions about outdoor lighting

These answers describe the work and the limits of what this website can claim. They are not a substitute for looking at a specific property.

What kind of work does Next Iva Outdoor do?

Next Iva Outdoor focuses on residential outdoor lighting: landscape lighting, architectural lighting, path and step lighting, tree and garden lighting, patio and outdoor-living lighting, plus repair and upgrades of existing systems. The work is design, placement, installation, and service of lighting for houses and outdoor spaces—not general electrical contracting, landscaping, or whole-home remodeling.

What is low-voltage landscape lighting?

Most dedicated landscape lighting systems step house power down through a transformer so fixtures operate at a much lower voltage, commonly around 12 volts. The transformer is the distribution point. Cable then feeds individual luminaires. That arrangement is typical for permanently installed landscape and architectural accent lighting. Line-voltage work on the house itself is a different class of electrical work and is handled according to applicable code and the equipment involved.

Do you serve only Sacramento?

The primary market is Sacramento, California and surrounding communities. The office address is in Sacramento. If you are nearby and want lighting for a residence, call or email to confirm whether the property is a practical fit. The company does not advertise statewide service.

How do you keep outdoor lighting from looking too bright or glaring?

The fixture should light the surface you want to see, not the viewer. That means hiding or shielding the lamp, using glare guards or louvers where needed, aiming away from windows and neighboring yards, and choosing a brightness that matches the task. DarkSky International and the Illuminating Engineering Society describe the same idea in their joint principles: light only where it is needed, only as bright as necessary, and only when it is useful.

What color of light is used outdoors?

Residential outdoor lighting is usually specified in a warm white range. DarkSky International’s residential luminaire guidance limits correlated color temperature to a nominal 3000 K as a way to reduce shorter-wavelength blue-violet light. Warmer sources also tend to sit more comfortably against brick, stone, wood, and plant material. Exact lamp color is chosen for the surfaces and the rest of the property, not as a one-size setting.

How are outdoor lights turned on and off?

Common controls include photocells, astronomical or programmable timers, and, where they help, motion sensors. Many systems combine an automatic dusk-to-time-off schedule with a manual override. California energy standards can apply to lighting that is permanently mounted to a residence; those rules change over time. Landscape lighting that is not attached to the building is often treated differently. Current requirements should be confirmed with the local building department for the specific property.

Can you work with lighting that is already installed?

Yes. Repair and upgrade work starts with what is already in the ground and on the house: transformers, cable, connections, fixtures, aiming, and controls. Some systems need cleaning, re-aiming, and a few replacement parts. Others benefit from an LED source change, a new transformer, or a tighter layout. The right path depends on the condition of the equipment, not a standard package.

Will plants grow into the lighting later?

They will. Outdoor lighting is installed in a living landscape. Shrubs fill in, canopies thicken, and a fixture that was hidden in spring can become a glare source by late summer. A durable design leaves aiming access, accounts for mature size, and expects periodic service: cleaning lenses, checking connections, and adjusting positions as the garden changes.

Do you install indoor lighting or general electrical work?

No. Next Iva Outdoor is a residential outdoor lighting company. Indoor lighting, panel work, and general electrical contracting are outside the scope of the site and the services described here.
